Innovative new Traffic and Travel service

Kilkenny and Carlow Local Authorities have joined forces to launch a ground-breaking new initiative for road users of both counties which is aimed at providing real time traffic information and encouraging greater road safety awareness.

The new Traffic and Travel service, which it is believed is the first of its type in the country, will be broadcast daily across Carlow and Kilkenny on local radio station KCLR 96fm. It will provide an up-to-the-minute service for motorists and road users across both counties informing them of traffic and road conditions, road closures and temporary hazards as well as reports on the incidents that are causing significant delay to the normal flow of traffic in the Carlow Kilkenny area.

The Traffic and Travel updates, which will be aired 10 times each day Monday to Friday, and also over the weekends, will inform KCLR 96fm listeners how to avoid the traffic chaos, various roadworks, and traffic incidents as they affect people around Kilkenny and Carlow. The aim is to help the public drive safer while giving them information to avoid delays and hold ups.

Speaking at the launch of the new service Councillor Billy Ireland, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council said that

"We are delighted to be working with our near neighbours in Carlow on such an important initiative. I expect this new service to be of great benefit to the travelling public at this time of unprecedented traffic growth on our roads. I am particularly pleased that the combined efforts of Kilkenny and Carlow Local Authorities, through the medium of local radio, will further underpin road safety in both counties. "

As well as the daily traffic and travel updates, the new partnership between the two Local Authorities and KCLR 96fm will feature a campaign of hard-hitting road safety announcements each Bank Holiday weekend.

Also speaking at the launch of the new service John Purcell, CEO of KCLR 96fm said that the new service would be of huge practical use to motorists. "Road safety has become an issue of burning importance with the people of Carlow Kilkenny and by providing this service in partnership with the Local Authorities, we are making a real contribution to people's safety" he said.

The service will be interactive through phone and text and the public are encouraged to call 1890 90 96 96 or text 087 2 96 96 96 with traffic updates from around the two counties.

Broadcast Time:

There will be three Traffic and Travel updates on The Breakfast Show with John Walsh (7 - 9am) and The Home Straight with Edwina Grace (5 - 7pm). There will be four more updates during the day between 11am and 5pm. Make sure you tune in to KCLR 96fm to catch the latest on 96.6fm and 96.0fm in Kilkenny or 96.9fm in Carlow, and help keep us up to date by phoning and texting your local traffic updates to the numbers above.
