irl - 16 Community Project Gets a Green Light under LA 21
Sixteen environmental projects received confirmation last week that they were successful in their application for funding under the Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund 2016. The projects are co-funded by the Department of Environment and Kilkenny County Council.
The fund fosters sustainable development by funding a wide range of local environmental initiatives. This year's projects are a mix of local community projects and education workshops which will be rolled out as part of the Councils ongoing Environment Education Programme. Workshops will be offered to both primary and secondary schools in the forthcoming academic year. The community projects vary, some focus on boosting local biodiversity while others plan to survey local areas to determine what types of wildlife occur naturally and raise awareness through guided walks. Many of the successful applications relate to community gardening projects, "there is a strong interest in growing food locally in a community setting which the Council welcomes as it is seen to have multiple advantages including the promotion of waste prevention and a capacity to build strong community links locally which nurtures community spirit" commented Bernadette Moloney, Environmental Awareness Officer with Kilkenny County Council
