Food Waste Regulations Survey
Food Waste Regulations Survey
A key requirement of the Food Waste Regulations is that food waste from commercial premises must be kept separate from other waste. Capturing it and keeping it separate from other waste ensures it can be recycled into compost. The Food Waste Regulations also prevents segregated food waste being sent to landfill.
Kilkenny County Council is legally obliged to complete annual inspections on commercial premises to ensure food waste is kept separate and is disposed of appropriately. This year, instead of visiting premises, we are asking commercial premises to complete a short survey on line to illustrate your compliance under the Food Waste Regulations.

Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009
Food Waste Regulations introduced by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in 2010 saw changes in how commercial premises dispose of biodegradable waste. The regulations are designed to promote the segregation and beneficial use of food waste arising from the commercial sector.
A wide range of businesses are affected by the Regulations:
Restaurants | Guest Houses (more than 4 bedrooms) |
Hotels | Industrial Buildings* |
Cafes | Office Buildings |
Pubs | Shops with Deli Counters |
Supermarkets | Educational Facilities* |
Hot Food Outlets | State Buildings* |
Nursing Homes | Hospitals |
* where canteen facilities are available
Obligations under the Food Regulations
Food waste arising from the above premises must be source segregated and kept separate from other waste streams. The segregated food must NOT be sent to landfill for disposal. It is to be made available for collection by your waste contractor or transferred directly to an authorised treatment facility.
