At 19.58 on Monday the 13th of October a call came to Kilkenny City Fire Station stating that rooms were on fire in John's College, John Street, Kilkenny.
Kilkenny immediately responded with a water tender and snorkel When they arrived Station Officer Jack Kennedy called for assistance from Thomastown and Freshford. Callan was then called in to cover for Kilkenny.
Captain Corrigan was notified and took charge of the fire. When they arrived at the fire the snorkel was sent up with two firemen and fought the fire from above while firemen with Breathing Apparatus fought the fire from inside.
After the fire Captain Corrigan said; "The snorkel paid it's way tonight. The roof was completely ablaze when we arrived. If it wasn't for the snorkel the whole building could have gone".
Captain Corrigan and a few firemen returned the next day to examine the building and found it safe. The fire gutted two dormitories, seriously damaged three others and also affected classrooms and living quarters.
