Free events & activities for older people at Mayfair Library
Friday 6th September to Friday 1st November 2024 at 11am - 1pm
Kilkenny County Council Age Friendly Programme, The Older People’s Council, Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership, HSE, An Garda and Kilkenny Library Service have teamed up to develop a programme of events and activities over 8 weeks. These events are free of charge and will run from Friday 6th September to Friday 1st November 2024 at 11am - 1pm.
Located in the new Mayfair Library, these events provide an opportunity for older people to find out about how to keep healthy and active as well as providing the opportunity to chat and meet with people. Tea/coffee will be available and library staff will be available to show people around the library and the range of services it offers.
All events are free of charge and booking is only required for the event on Friday 25th October, 11:00am-1:00pm 'Minding Your Wellbeing Self Care' due to limited places available.

Ageing Well in the Community | Friday 6th September, 11am - 1pmCathriona Normoyle and Philip O' Reilly, HSE Carlow Kilkenny Integrated Care for the Older Persons (ICPOP) Team This presentation will focus on positive ageing and how to prevent frailty in older adults. The team will demonstrate exercises that an older person can do at home. They will also discuss the importance of making a will, and advanced healthcare directives. It will also focus on other services in the community and how to access them. |
Dementia Awareness | Friday 13th September, 11am - 1pmLiam Redmond and Mary Hickey, Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Dementia Kilkenny/Carlow This presentation will cover early signs and symptoms of Dementia and advice for living well with dementia in your community. |
What Does Being Physically Active Mean? | Friday 20th September, 11am - 1pmSeamus Nugent, Kilkenny Recreational and Sports Partnership (KRSP) Seamus will cover the benefits of being physically active and discuss the physical activity guidelines as well as opportunities to be active with KRSP in Kilkenny. He will talk about how to become physically active and also highlight some barriers to physical activity. Seamus will also do a light session. Please bring comfortable clothes and water and a tiny bit of energy! |
Kilkenny Age Friendly Strategy | Friday 27th September, 11am - 1pmNollaig McGuinness, Consultant for the next Kilkenny Age Friendly Strategy Kilkenny County Council and its partners are currently developing a new Age Friendly Strategy. As part of the consultation process we are hosting this information session with older people and all interested parties. This session will look at what the priorities should be for our new Age Friendly Strategy. |
Age Friendly Healthy Homes | Friday 4th October 2024, 11am - 1pmLinda Kirwan, Kilkenny Age Friendly Homes Coordinator Linda will present on her role as part of the Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme which aims to support older people to live in their own home with dignity and independence for as long as possible. The programme's ambition is to enable everyone to live longer healthier lives by keeping care close to home and expanding the range of health and social care services in the community. |
Assisted Decision Making & Safeguarding | Friday 18th October 2024, 11am - 1pmRob O'Connor and Gemma Flood, Assisted Decision Making and Safeguarding, HSE A chance to learn about this service in the HSE, in case you or a loved one or friend may need support at some point. Safeguarding about knowing the different preventative supports available that an older adult can put in place to stop abuse happening in the future. |
Minding your Wellbeing Self Care | Friday 25th October, 11am - 1pmAnn Bray, Health Promotion and Improvement Officer, Health and Wellbeing Division This workshop gives you time and space to think about your own wellbeing. It will support you to build and practice self-care skills. Booking for this event is required. |
Community Safety Talk | Friday 1st November, 11am -1pmInspector Alma Molloy, Kilkenny Garda Station Inspector Molloy will discuss personal safety and security for older people both in the home and in the community. |
