Key Public Safety Messages for Low Temperature/Ice warning for Ireland

Travel & Road Safety

  • Roads, footpaths, cycle lanes, and untreated surfaces may become extremely slippery.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, reduce speed, allow extra time, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Be especially vigilant for black ice, which is most common in the early morning and late evening.
  • Use caution on rural routes, shaded areas, bridges, and exposed stretches where ice forms more quickly.

Stay Clear of Waterways

  • Even in freezing conditions, waterways and surrounding areas can still pose significant risks due to:
  • Hidden or thin ice
  • Reduced visibility
  • Slippery or unstable riverbanks and towpaths

The Irish Coast Guard advises: “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry.”

Agricultural Advisory

Farmers are advised to:

  • Move machinery, vehicles, and livestock away from iced‑over yards, slopes, or unstable ground.
  • Ensure water supplies for animals remain unfrozen and accessible.
  • Take extra care when handling equipment and carrying out essential tasks in dark or icy conditions.

Personal Preparedness

  • Keep mobile phones fully charged for weather updates and emergency communication.
  • Have torches, blankets, warm clothing, and basic supplies available in case of local power outages or travel delays.
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours, including older persons and those living alone. A quick call or visit can be extremely important during severe cold.

ESB Networks warns of risks from snow‑laden branches, fallen trees, or downed wires:
