Preparing Today for Tomorrow's Emergencies
Emergencies can happen at any time, often with little warning. Severe weather, flooding, power outages, disruption to communications, cyber incidents and other unexpected events can affect households, communities and essential services.
The Be Emergency Ready campaign encourages people to take simple, practical steps to prepare themselves and their families before an emergency occurs. By making a plan, maintaining essential supplies and staying connected with neighbours and local services, households can be better equipped to cope when everyday services are disrupted.
The Three Steps to Being Emergency Ready
The campaign is built around three simple actions that everyone can take:
Be AwareUnderstand the risks that could affect your area and household. These may include storms, flooding, cyber attacks or disruptions to critical supply chains. Taking time to consider these risks can help you make informed decisions and prepare effectively. | Make a PlanThink about what you and your household would need if normal services were unavailable for a period of time. Keep important documents safe, maintain a list of emergency contacts and ensure any regular medications are readily available. | Stay ConnectedStrong communities are more resilient during emergencies. Stay in touch with family, neighbours and local support networks. Sharing information and supporting vulnerable members of the community can make a real difference when emergencies occur. |
Why Emergency Preparedness Matters
During an emergency, services such as electricity, water, transport and communications may be disrupted. Even small preparations can help households remain safe, comfortable and informed until normal services are restored.
Some preparation is better than no preparation at all.
Maintaining water, food, lighting, medical supplies and important documents can help reduce the impact of unexpected events and provide peace of mind.
Supporting Your Community
Communities play a vital role during emergencies. A simple check-in with a neighbour, family member or friend can help ensure that those who may be isolated or vulnerable receive support when they need it most.
Emergency preparedness is not just about individual households. It's about building stronger, safer and more resilient communities that can work together when challenges arise.
If an emergency occurs, call 112 or 999 and request the emergency service you require. It is also important that everyone in the household knows their Eircode and keeps key contact details accessible.
Take One Small Step Today
Check your emergency supplies, talk to your family about a plan, and connect with your neighbours.
Being prepared today can make a significant difference when the unexpected happens.
