Following a successful first year, Wild Kilkenny, a community biodiversity course for adults, is returning this May. The programme is delivered by the Biodiversity Office of Kilkenny County Council and supports the goals of the Kilkenny Biodiversity Action Plan 2025–2030 by building local knowledge, skills and engagement with nature.  Supported by the community division of the Kilkenny Education Training Board under their REACH Fund 2026 “Wild Kilkenny” is also part funded by Kilkenny County Council and The Heritage Council.

Wild Kilkenny is a five-week course designed to explore the biodiversity of the county within the wider context of ecological processes, landscape change and conservation. The course combines guided field trips at weekends, mid-week evening lectures, citizen science and practical learning, helping 15 participants apply ecological understanding to their work, interests and everyday lives.

Participants will discover Kilkenny’s rich natural heritage, including woodland ecosystems, local geology, wildlife identification and conservation practices in action. A strong emphasis is placed on hands on learning, giving participants the confidence and practical skills to record and help protect local biodiversity.

The course is structured to be accessible while prioritising field experience. Evening lectures will take place mid-week, with outdoor field trips held on Sunday mornings. The programme begins in the first week of May and runs for five weeks.

Participants will gain practical biodiversity skills, begin developing their own field resources and connect with a growing community of ecologically informed citizens. No prior experience is required, and the course is open to adults with an interest in nature and the environment.
