Air Quality Monitoring

Air quality monitoring in Ireland is led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the national Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Programme (AAMP). Real-time and historic data from all monitoring stations across the State is always available at www.airquality.ie

In addition, the EPA operates an Air Quality Index for Health (AQIH), which runs on a scale from 1 (Good) to 10 (Very Poor). The latest AQIH for all monitoring station locations is always also available at www.airquality.ie

In County Kilkenny, as part of this network, there are monitoring stations located in Thomastown and Callan.

Thomastown:  https://airquality.ie/station/TNO4157

Callan:  https://airquality.ie/station/EPA-36

These monitoring stations collect air quality data, such as Particulate Matter (PM) for public information and for assessment against European legal limit values and WHO guideline values.

Ireland has developed state of the art modelling infrastructure to produce annual high resolution (up to 10 x 10 m) national air quality maps. The EPA will utilise this infrastructure to create annual average maps, once a year to fill in unmonitored gaps across the country. This level of detail will substantially improve our understanding of air pollution across the country. These maps can be found at Annual High-Resolution Maps | AirQuality.ie

Pollutants mapped include:

  • Particulate matter 2.5 micrometers in size (PM2.5)
  • Particulate matter 10 micrometers in size (PM10)
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Ozone (O3)
