Septic Tank Grants

The grants are available to assist householders with the cost of works for the remediation, repair, upgrade, or replacement of a domestic waste water treatment system (DWWTS) serving a house. They may be eligible to apply for a grant to us (their local authority) if they meet the criteria set out in the Terms and Conditions for the scheme.

 

Grants are available under three separate schemes:

DWWTS grant under the National Inspection Plan

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has responsibility for the preparation of a National Inspection Plan for the inspection and monitoring of DWWTS, in order to help identify DWWTS that are not meeting the expected standard. It is the responsibility of us (the local authority) to implement the plan on behalf of the EPA.

The local authority responsibility under the National Inspection Plan include:

  1. Selecting sites for inspection and completing the minimum inspection allocations in accordance with this plan.
  • Under the National Inspection Plan 2022–2026, Kilkenny are responsible for carrying out the following minimum inspection:
    • 43 No. of Inspections in Zone 1
    • 178 No. of Inspections in Zone 2
    • 25 No. of inspections in Zone 3
  1. Ensuring inspections are carried out in accordance with the legislation and guidance as set out in this plan.
  2. Following up on advisory notices including engagement and prosecution where warranted.
  3. Completing public engagement activities in accordance with this plan.

DWWTS grant in Prioritised Areas for Action

In order to be eligible for this grant, the DWWTS serving a house must be situated in a Prioritised Area for Action in accordance with the River Basin Management Plan for Ireland 2018-2021, and the applicant must have received a letter from the Local Authority Waters Programme Office on behalf of the local authority, confirming eligibility to apply for a grant.

DWWTS grant in High Status Objective Catchment Areas.

In order to be eligible for this grant, the DWWTS serving a house must be situated in a High Status Objective Catchment Area in accordance with the River Basin Management Plan for Ireland 2018-2021, and the applicant must have received a letter from the local authority confirming eligibility to apply for a grant.

To help identify if a house is in a HSOCA area, this can be checked by inputting an EIRCODE in the map.
