LEAF Literacy and Food Education at the Library

LEAF funded under the Community Climate Action Programme is a pilot programme with GIY (Grow it Yourself Waterford). The Programme was launched in our 5 participating libraries Castlecomer, Graiguenamanagh, Ferrybank, Loughboy and Thomastown, last summer and continues with free seeds (Peas, Beans and Spinach) available when people register with the LEAF programme.

Our 5 participating libraries were very busy organising some super Spring activities for you.

Graiguenamanagh and Thomastown Libraries hosted Kitty Scully for an inspiring talk that will change the way you see your garden this spring. Kitty shard lots of practical tips and techniques for creating an abundant, low-impact food garden that nourishes both the earth and your soul this growing season.

Ferrybank Library hosted a Rain Gardens Made Easy talk, on how to create the perfect rain garden for your situation and help prevent flooding. This was followed by Eco Soap Making with Aoife Munn. Participants learned how you can save the planet one bar at a time with this colourful and sensory workshop. 

Meanwhile Castlecomer Library were joined by horticulturist Monica Fleming for a workshop on how to get started with growing your own seeds. Monica covered seed swapping, seed sowing, compost, seeds trays, watering, aftercare and potting.

Finally, in Loughboy Library “A Talk About How to Grow Vegetables” with Giedre Dunphy was based on some easy to grow vegetables. Giedre brought in some plants to demonstrate and some home saved seeds to share. She also shared her fermented vegetables for anyone who would like a taste, while talking about the health benefits of fermented foods.
