Heritage Council and Kilkenny County Council jointly announce introduction of the Kilkenny Archaeological Project to HeritageMaps.ie
A partnership between the Heritage Council, Kilkenny County Council Heritage Office and Kilkenny Archaeology Ltd has led to the creation of a new map on HeritageMaps.ie, based on the work carried out by the Kilkenny Archaeological Project (KKAP). The map provides direct links to digital copies of the numerous excavations, architectural recording projects, geophysical surveys and news reports that were amassed specifically for the project by KKAP researchers.
Speaking about the launch of this new resource, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Eamon Aylward, explained "This project, driven by our Heritage Office, represents a unique and invaluable new archaeological resource which can be used in new and imaginative ways by Kilkenny County Council, local historians, heritage societies, schools and the general public. We are delighted to be the second local authority, after Dublin City, to undertake such a project." Dearbhala Ledwidge, Heritage Officer agreed "This is a treasure trove for anyone with an interest in Kilkenny City's past. The archaeological reports and findings from the period 1968 to 2006 are now accessible to everyone."
Discussing the HeritageMaps.ie and KKAP map, Beatrice Kelly, Head of Policy & Research at the Heritage Council, said "this dataset provides links to numerous diverse records of Kilkenny's archaeological, built and social heritage, ranging from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century. It will be a valuable research resource for decades to come."
Pat Reid, Project Manager of HeritageMaps.ie stated that "the KKAP map is a wonderful resource for all those with an interest in the historical fabric of this magnificently preserved medieval city and it is great to be involved in making it publically accessible via HeritageMaps.ie."
The KKAP map is now accessible within the Archaeology folder on HeritageMaps.ie.
This initiative is an action of the County Kilkenny Cultural Strategy (Arts, Heritage & Libraries) 2018-2022. It is co-funded by the Heritage Office of Kilkenny County Council and the Heritage Council.
