Siamsa

Our 2018 Siamsa Spring programme commenced in January. The first programme started on 28th January, "My Magical Garden" with Sheila Jordan. A series of three fun workshops offering children the opportunity to explore textiles through the art of feltmaking and stitch. Participants handled and experimented with different types of fibres for feltmaking e.g. various wools, silk, bamboo and learned a little about these materials and where they came from.

These hands-on workshops allowed the children to build on their skills each week in a creative and supportive environment; we looked at the work of some contemporary artists who use felt as their chosen medium. The children played with colour and texture and created their own imaginary garden in felt.

Our second spring programme the Wonderful World of Paper & Paper Constructions with Paul Bokslag commenced on Sunday 25th February. These three workshops were based around paper as a material and offered the children the opportunity to learn about cultures and artists who have used paper in different ways by looking at and talking about slides, printouts and books. Through hand-on art making they developed a variety of skills relating to working with the material. They took home something new each day. They investigated the characteristics of paper cuts in different countries around the world and worked on a few fun projects relating to these. Using paper and scissors, they learned about positive and negative space, form, gesture, rhythm and pattern.
