The River Nore Linear Park is a scenic network of riverside walks through Kilkenny City. Whether you're seeking tranquillity, heritage, or outdoor activity, this park offers a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly way to enjoy the River Nore and its surroundings.

Canal Walk

  • Historic origins from the 1750s canal project between Kilkenny and Inistioge
  • Tree-lined path between Kilkenny Castle and the River Nore
  • Features: mill races, weirs, wells, and canal remnants
  • Access to Kilkenny Castle Park along the route
  • Loop option via Lacken Walk and Ossory Pedestrian Bridge
  • Alternative route: Nore Valley Walk (waymarked)

Bishops Meadows Walk

  • Refurbished in 2009
  • Begins at the horseshoe weir (Kilkenny City Flood Relief Scheme)
  • Extends to Talbot’s Inch Village and site of the 1906 pedestrian bridge
  • Ends at Bleach Road Weir, historically linked to local mills

Lacken Walk

  • Combines historic and modern elements
  • Ossory Pedestrian Bridge (2014) and boardwalk (renovated 2024)
  • Key features: Lacken Well (1831 plaque), Lacken Mill (1774)
  • Viewing area on Dublin Road with views of River Nore and Kilkenny Castle
  • Route passes County Hall and ends at John’s Bridge

Peace Park

  • Located between Greensbridge Street and John’s Quay
  • 600m linear walk featuring Kilkenny World War I Memorial
  • Memorial unveiled in 2018, commemorating over 800 Kilkenny lives
  • Central statue of a soldier in repose

Abbey Quarter Riverside Gardens

  • Opened June 2021
  • Connects Bateman Quay Tea Houses to Greens Bridge
  • Features: landscaped gardens, pollinator-friendly planting
  • Includes Kilkenny’s skate park
