Register to Vote

In order to be able to vote at an election or referendum, your name must be entered on the Register of Electors for the locality in which you ordinarily reside. The Register of Electors is available for inspection at Kilkenny County Council Offices and online at www.checktheregister.ie

Please note it is your responsibility to ensure that you are registered.

Conditions for Registration

Age: Every resident aged 18 years and upwards is entitled to be on the register. A person may register from the age of 16 years of age, however they will not be able to vote until they are 18.

Residence: a person must be ordinarily resident in the state and at the address at which they wish to be registered.

No fixed abode: If you have no fixed address you can still register online at www.checktheregister.ie or by completing an ERF2 form. Please contact us if you would like further information at franchise@kilkennycoco.ie / 056 779 4070

Who can vote?

Citizenship: every adult resident in the state is entitled to be registered; their citizenship determines the type of elections they may vote in.

Voting Rights

Irish - Irish Citizens: may vote at every election and Referendum

British - British Citizens: may vote at Dáil and Local Elections

British/EU Citizen: may vote at Dail, European and Local Elections

EU – European Citizens may vote at European and Local Elections

Non-EU - Non-European Citizens: may vote at Local Elections

Potential EU – Potential European Citizens: may vote at Local Elections

14 days before an election / referendum the local authority will close the register.  Each citizen should check the register well in advance of an election to ensure that they are registered and all their details are correct.

New legislation was introduced on 13th October 2022 requiring additional information to register to vote – this now includes the requirement for a PPSN, DOB and Eircode.  This was introduced to enhance the integrity of the register.

Note: you may be required to produce documentary evidence to support your eligibility to vote, e.g. a birth certificate or a certificate of naturalization

Postal Voters List

You can register for a postal vote if you are:

  • a member of the defence forces
  • an Irish diplomat working abroad (and your partner / spouse with Irish citizenship)
  • a member of An Garda Síochána
  • detained in Prison

    Note:

    • You will be required to produce documentary evidence to support your eligibility for a postal vote.
    • An elector registered as a postal voter may vote by post only and may not vote at a polling station.
    • Please note that if you are out of the country on holiday you are not eligible for a postal vote.

    Citizens residing in full time nursing homes, convalescence homes and religious institutions can register for a Special Vote.
