Trailer Licencing and Registration
Information on how to register a trailer with the motor tax office and the forms required.
Trailer Licencing
Trailers with a Design Gross Vehicle Weight (DGVW) of 3500kg or greater, must be registered, licensed and D.O.E. tested (have a certificate of roadworthiness, CRW) in order to be used on the road
There is an initial registration fee of €60
Trailer Registration
Before first use of a trailer, it must be registered and issued with a Trailer Registration Number and a Trailer Licence Card
There are 2 types of trailer registration depending on the individual circumstances of the trailer
TYPE 1 applies to trailers in the following categories:
- Trailers manufactured on or after 29th of October 2012 in one single stage by a single manufacturer (i.e. single stage build)
- Trailers manufactured on or after 29th October 2013 in more than one stage by more than one manufacturer (i.e. multi-stage build)
- Special Purpose Trailers
- Trailers previously registered in another EU member state
In order to register trailers which fall into the above categories, the trailer owner must present the following to the Motor Taxation Office
1. Completed Trailer Licence Application form TF100 -

3. Type Approval Certificate issued from the manufacturer, (except in case of trailers previously registered in another EU member state, see ** below)
4. Registration fee of €60
**In order to license a vehicle previously licensed or registered in another EU Member State the same process as above applies however you will be required to supply evidence of previous registration or licensing in another Member State with the Form TF300A instead of the manufacturers Type Approval Certificate.
TYPE 2 applies to trailers that do not fall into the above categories, i.e. trailers in the following categories:
- Trailers manufactured prior to the 29th of October 2012
- Completed (multi-stage built) trailers manufactured prior to the 29th of October 2013
- Special purpose trailers manufactured prior to 29th of October 2014
- Trailers designed and constructed to be towed exclusively by agricultural tractors or trailers designed and constructed exclusively for use by The Defence Forces, Civil Defence, Garda Siochana or Fire Services
In order to register trailers which fall into the above categories, the trailer owner must present the following to the Motor Taxation Office

completed by the manufacturer or, where the manufacturer cannot be contacted, the form must be completed by an Approved Test Centre (ATC) of the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI.)
3. Registration fee of €60
Upon first registration of a trailer, a Trailer Registration Number will be assigned and a Trailer Licence Card is also issued
Trailers are also required to hold a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness which is due for the first time once the trailer is 1 year old
