Factory Fire, Urlingford 7th February 2004

Firefighters Helmet as Flowerpot: Graphic Kilkenny Fire and Rescue Service dealt with a serious factory fire in Urlingford. It was one of the biggest fires that they attended in recent years. The Brigade Control room was notified at 14.14hrs on Saturday 7th February 2004 to a fire at Bergin's Meat Factory, Urlingford. Urlingford Fire Brigade was the first fire brigade on the scene and was faced with a heavily smoke logged single storey building.

4 No Firefighters in BA were committed to extinguish the seat of the fire. In the process, the roof collapsed and injured all four firefighters, thankfully the injuries were not serious and most were treated on site. One firefighter was taken to hospital and was discharged that same evening.


Over 40 firefighters from Urlingford, Castlecomer, Freshford, Kilkenny City and Thurles fought the blaze (6 pumping appliances and 1no HP and 1no Water Tanker) using breathing apparatus and 5 jets. About 25% of the building was saved.

Urlingford Fire Brigade remained on scene till 03.00hrs the next day.

Callan Fire Brigade have recently taken delivery of a new Fire Engine (Kilfire 6) the official handover will take place early next year in conjunction with the official opening of Callan Fire station.
